Italy's European Parliament members and ambassador of that country in Bosnia and Herzegovina refused on Sunday to comment on the treatment by Croatian police a day earlier when the Italian diplomats visited that country to check the situation with migrants on Croatia-Bosnia border.

The MEPs arrived in Croatia on Saturday to inspect the situation with the alleged pushback of migrants on border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, but were prevented by the police from reaching the border.

Citing the Italian media outlet Avvenire, the news portal Index.hr reported that the situation was very tense at the Croatia-Bosnia border and that the Croatian police were chasing the MEPs in attempt to prevent them from reaching the checkpoint, where migrants are mostly barred from entering Croatia.

“We did not expect that and right now I would not like to comment on what happened in Croatia. We will talk and discuss it in the following days,” MEP Brando Benifei told media.

The delegation then visited the neighbouring Una-Sana Canton in Bosnia's northwest and the migrant camps located in that area.

“We cannot be satisfied with what we saw. The conditions at Lipa camp are unacceptable. We would like to help both these people in trouble and the local community. We must not forget this is about human lives,” said Benefei, adding that the MEPs will insist on equal distribution of migrants.

“When I say that, I am primarily referring to all European Union countries,” he underlined.

The authorities in Una-Sana Canton and its administrative centre, Bihac, informed the EU officials about the complexity of the migration process in this part of the country. They expressed the readiness and wish to cooperate but without imposing of solutions that would be unacceptable for local communities.
