Bosnian director Jasmila Zbanic received the Award for Contribution to the Preservation of the Culture of Remembrance for her overall artistic work and contribution, at the Sarajevo National Theatre Saturday evening.

Zbanic is the fourth laureate to win the Award within the Memory Module since 2018. Earlier, Milomir Kovacevic-Strasni, Ron Haviv and Paul Lowe received this award.

In a statement to the press, after receiving the award, she said that she strives to give young people a kind of emancipation by watching films about the past.

“I want them to survive, to see what our experience was so that they wouldn't have to wonder what it was like and so that they could go on. That is my wish when I talk about my films and why I make them,” said the BiH director.

Answering the question, why the culture of remembrance has a political context, she said that the facts regarding the war in BiH are quite politicized.

“However, they cannot and must not be as such. They have been proven and we should insist on that,” she added.

Nihad Kresevljakovic, Director of the MESS International Theater Festival and Artistic Director of the Memory Module Program, pointed out, at the award ceremony, that the Award was given to Zbanic for her overall artistic work and contribution to creating a culture of memory, affirmation of human rights and freedoms, as well as laying the foundation for better mutual understanding between people.

Speaking about the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards which will be presented Sunday evening in London, Zbanic told N1 that everything about the ceremony in which she was nominated in two categories, for the best foreign film and best director is a victory.

“We talk to each other via Zoom and connect with the other nominees. We are focused on making everything turn out well. It’s already a great achievement to me that we’ve come this far and that everyone's talking about the film (“Quo Vadis, Aida?”). It is an important moment and I am trying to feel it properly,” Zbanic told N1.

As for her expectations are concerned, she said the film achieved everything it needed to.

“Everything else is a plus and good for the film. As a director, my dream is for as many people as possible to watch the film, and that's exactly what's happening. In Europe itself, it will be in cinemas this spring, in America, it is already in cinemas, as well as in some parts of England… This is a good opportunity for the film,” Zbanic concluded.

Jasmila Zbanic's film “Quo Vadis, Aida?”, about the Srebrenica genocide of 1995, has received two BAFTA nominations and an Oscar nomination.
