City councillors decided to name the mayor of Ljubljana, Zoran Jankovic, an Honorary Citizen of Sarajevo on Wednesday.
The initiative came from Sarajevo Mayor Abdulah Skaka and in its explanation, the City Council said that Jankovic contributed greatly to the development and strengthening of the traditional friendship between the two capitals.
“Thanks to his commitment and strong support, mutual relations between the two partner cities, formalized by the Protocol on Cooperation in 2002, are taking place to the mutual satisfaction of citizens in the fields of economy, culture, tourism, sports, infrastructure projects, university and youth cooperation, through membership in international associations of cities and the like,” the City of Sarajevo administration said.
It is added that Jankovic's tolerance and multicultural awareness have been confirmed by him providing conditions for the construction of an Islamic religious and cultural centre in Ljubljana.
During Jankovic’s mandate, Ljubljana also contributed to the restoration of Sarajevo’s City Hall and a street in Ljubljana carries the name of Sarajevo, it said.
