Greens/EFA MEP Thomas Waitz said that the decision of the Office of the High Representative (OHR), which was announced by the High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina Christian Smidt on election night, was a " slap in the face of voters."

“The OHR’s decision on the Election Law in BiH came yesterday while votes were still being counted (!) is a slap in the face of voters. Instead of respecting the election process and the will of the people, Schmidt prefers to give out favours to the CSU's sister party Croat Democratic Union (HDZ BiH). Voters clearly chose progressive over nationalistic politicians. Yet Schmidt provokes another crisis with an unnecessary move that benefits the losers of the election. He is destroying trust & massively damages the OHR as a whole by playing party politics,” Waitz said.

“This is unacceptable and I am glad the EU has distanced itself from Schmidt’s decision. The international community must not be divided on the issue. This election could be a big step for BiH on its path towards the EU,” he concluded.

High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina Christian Schmidt imposed changes to the Election Law on Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the changes to the Constitution of the Bosniak-Croat, shared Federation entity, officially called the ‘Measures to improve the Federation Functionality.

The decision was passed on the day when Bosnia held general elections.
