Renowned Mexican director, screenwriter and producer Michel Franco received on Tuesday the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo, the recognition he was originally awarded at the 26th Sarajevo Film Festival last year.
The award comes for Franco's “outstanding contribution to cinematic art as well as his support of the Sarajevo Film Festival,” the organisers said in the original announcement from 2020.
Franco did not attend the last year's festival which was held online due to pandemic, so he received the award tonight before the screening of his ‘New Order’ film, which premiered in Venice in 2020 and won the Silver Lion – Grand Jury Prize.
Franco visited Sarajevo for the first time in 2009, when his first feature film ‘Daniel and Ana’ which premiered in the Directors’ Fortnight section at the Cannes Film Festival, was screened at the Sarajevo Film Festival.
During the 23rd SFF (2017) Franco was the president of the jury of the Competition Programme – Feature Film. His film ‘Las Hijas de Abril’ (‘April's Daughter’) was screened as part of the Open Air programme on the 23rd Sarajevo Film Festival, and won the jury award of the section Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival.
