Migrants in BiH camps have only one wish – to welcome the next Eid in the EU

Modestly and far from home, migrants in camps all over BiH welcomed Eid Al-Fitr on Thursday. Their wishes are simple and almost the same for everyone - health, happiness, and to welcome the next Eid in their new homes in Europe.

Congratulations, hugs, best wishes also came to the Demlaki family with their children.

“This is the first Eid in Bosnia, we celebrated the previous one in Macedonia, it's nice here, I'm happy to be here in Bosnia,” said Hitam Demlaki.

Iran, Russia, America, Bashar… She has to move forward because of her son Ahmed, who has problems with his digestive tract. She was twice in the hospital in BiH.

“I lived in the hospital first for a month and then for 25 days. The doctors are very good, and so are the nurses,” says Hitam.

However, the Demlaki family say they never discover why Ahmed cannot have a stool on his own, which is why his mother, who is also a nurse, must help him by herself.

“We went into ‘the game’ (a migrant term for attempting to cross the border), the Croatian police set everything on fire, they set everything on fire. We have to go to Europe to help him. But also to help ourselves, for our future. He should have a difficult surgery. They told my mother at the hospital that they didn’t know what the problem was, doctors in Europe would know,” daughter Helam Demlaki said.

Some are happy because of Eid, others are sad because they are not at home.

Ebad Ahadi from Iran also went to Europe.

“Every celebration makes us feel happy, so Eid makes people feel good. For people who have problems, it is good when there is a celebration in the camp,” said Ahadi.

Among the migrants, we also met a young man from Pakistan, he is a Christian; he said adding that there is intolerance between Muslims and Christians in his country, but there are no such problems in the camp.

“I am a Christian, but I know Muslims celebrate [Eid] today. People can eat today, people are closer, but nothing too much,“ said Samran Sahotra, a Christian from Pakistan.

Some are happy because of Eid, others are sad because they are not at home, all with the same desire, to welcome the next Eid in an EU member state.
