More than a thousand commemorative events will be held this week across the United Kingdom to mark the 26th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide and to honour the victims, the UK-based charity Remembering Srebrenica has announced.

The events will be held in schools, city halls, police precincts, prisons, universities, mosques, synagogues, and churches on the occasion of the 26th anniversary which is marked on July 11, according to the statement.

The UK is the world's largest commemorator of local memorial activities in Srebrenica, organised by the Remembering Srebrenica UK association in its eight regional committees in England, three state committees in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and 1,450 volunteers in honour of genocide victims and survivors.

The association is also organising a national ceremony to mark the Srebrenica Remembrance Day in the UK, which will be broadcast online entirely this year on July 8 at 5 pm, allowing people across the UK to gather in a collective act of remembrance.

Waqar Azmi, the association chairman, said this was a chance for everyone to learn from the stories of the genocide survivors who, despite the hatred and devastation, recovered their lives in a dignified manner and without calling for revenge.

“Their spirit is extraordinary and their humanity inspiring. We will remember,” he said.
