The images of Olympic rings and the 1984 Winter Olympic Games mascot – Vucko were displayed on Sarajevo's landmark City Hall on Tuesday evening, in memory of the opening ceremony of the 14th Winter Olympic Games that was held in the Bosnian capital 38 years ago.

“It has been almost four decades since the Winter Olympic Games, but the time seems to stand still in the hearts of Sarajevans,” the city mayor Benjamina Karic tweeted with the photo of the City Hall.

She said that Sarajevo has a chance to bring back the Olympic flame together with friends from Barcelona in 2030, referring to the support that European Olympic committees expressed for the two cities in co-hosting the Olympics in 2030.

Thirty-nine sports events were held in Sarajevo from February 8 through February 19, 1984 at four city venues, five venues on the mountains surrounding the city and other facilities including the Olympic village and press village.

By that time, it was the record number of National Olympic Committees (49) to enter the Olympics.

The opening ceremony at the Kosevo stadium was performed in front of more than 60,000 spectators on the site and two more billions who watched it on TV across the world.
