It is necessary to promote and teach the facts about the wartime events in Srebrenica to the coming generations in order to fight genocide denial, the founder of the Humanitarian Law Center in Serbia, Natasa Kandic, said at the launch of the Leadership Initiative for Srebrenica on Thursday.

The Leadership Initiative for Srebrenica is an informal group of former and current top elected and appointed officials, which is based on an idea by the Srebrenica Memorial Center and the project ‘Truth, Dialogue, Future’, supported by the Government of the United Kingdom.
Kandic said that it is important the Srebrenica Memorial Center has an archive on what happened in Srebrenica, because without it “there is no possibility to include yonder generations.”

Kandic said that Serbia only once truly stood with the victims of the Srebrenica genocide – when a local TV channel aired a video of the execution of five Bosniaks from Srebrenica, which was presented in 2005 during the trial against former Serbian President, Slobodan Milosevic.

“This never happened again. That important moment was missed, mostly because of the government that did not support it, but retaliated with the attitude that the crime was committed by a group that has nothing to do with the state,” she said, adding that, since then, “in Serbia have had denial.”
