Srebrenica Memorial Centre invited all those who had witnessed genocide in this eastern Bosnian town to share their experiences, in order to preserve the truth about this mass killing from the 1992-95 Bosnian war.

“Every story matters, every testimony carries a part of history from this region about the past war, so we ask all our fellow citizens who survived genocide, and who were in besieged Srebrenica in 1995, to reach us through social networks, email, or our phone number,” the Centre said in the message.

For the past year, the Memorial Centre has been working on the video materials containing the testimonies of all those who had spent the war in Srebrenica and who survived genocide.

“We are aware of the fact that many mothers, wives, and other family members of the genocide victims left this world forever over the past few years, and they did not tell their survival experiences. Every story, every testimony is a separate and important part of the truth about genocide against the Bosniak population,” said the statement.

On July 11, 1995, Bosnian Serb forces overran the eastern Bosnian enclave and rounded up the town’s Muslim Bosniaks, separated men from women and little children and systematically executed some 8,000 men and boys.

The bodies of the victims were dumped into numerous mass graves in the area. Forensic experts excavated them and identified the bones through DNA analysis before returning the bodies to the families. Those rebury them every year on July 11 at the Memorial Centre’s cemetery.

Two international courts, the International Criminal Tribunal (ICTY) for the Former Yugoslavia and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) later ruled that the massacre was an act of genocide.
