The Srebrenica Memorial Center marked the 28th anniversary of the massacre of 33 Croats in the southern village of Grabovica, perpetrated by members of the then Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and urged anyone who may have information about those still missing to come forward.

On the night between 8 and 9 of September 1993, members of the RBiH Army entered the village and massacred the civilians, including a 4-year-old girl and 87-year-old man.

Former members of the RBiH Army were held accountable before domestic courts in BiH for individual killings, but no one was sentenced for war crimes against civilians or for command responsibility.

“According to the final verdicts, it has been proven beyond a reasonable doubt that at least 13 Croat civilians were killed in the crime in Grabovica, including one 4-year-old child. The previous verdicts for this crime have determined the responsibility of 5 people, which is a small but important step in our joint fight for justice,” the Srebrenica Memorial Center said.

The Memorial Centre called on anyone who may have information on the location of persons still missing from this massacre to come forward.

“We extend our condolences and sympathies to the families of the victims of Grabovica, and especially to the brave boys Goran and Zoran Zadra, who survived the massacre and, with their stories, made it so that the crime was not forgotten and that the perpetrators were brought to justice. Also, we must not forget the hard and courageous work of war journalist Sefka Hodzic from Sarajevo's Oslobodjenje, who was among the first to investigate the story of Grabovica,” it said.

The Memorial Center called for reform in Bosnia’s education system in order to “ensure that future generations do not celebrate criminals and do not deny the facts of aggression and genocide from 1992 to 1995.”

They also called on the Prosecutor's Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina to take an active approach to establish responsibility for all those who glorify war crimes and deny the verdicts of both the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the courts in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“The role and mission of the Srebrenica Memorial Center are to preserve the memory of the victims of the July 1995 genocide against Bosniaks. At the same time, our role is to be a link in the dialogue on dealing with the past, protecting the rule of law and building an inter-ethnic dialogue that will ensure that what happened to our loved ones is never repeated to anyone,” the statement concluded.
