Srebrenica Mothers rep: We're happy with the verdict, but not the sentence

While victims can never be fully satisfied, it is important that former top Serbian security officials, Jovica Stanisic and Franko Simatovic, were found guilty of aiding and abetting the war crimes that took place in Bosnia, as it established a connection between Serbia and the wartime developments in BiH, the head of the Mothers of Srebrenica and zepa Enclaves Association, Munira Subasic, said following the ruling.

The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) found on Wednesday that former head of Serbia's State Security Service (SDB), Stanisic, and former head of the country's Special Operations Unit (JSO), Simatovic, are guilty of aiding and abetting the war crimes committed in Bosnia and Croatia between 1992 and 1995 and sentenced each of them to 12 years in prison.

“They are responsible for (war crimes in) Bosanski Samac, that is the connection between BiH and Serbia,” she said, arguing that the crimes were part of a joint criminal enterprise.

“The past cannot be returned,” she said, urging youth in Serbia and Bosnia’s Republika Srpska (RS) to refrain from hatred.

“Serbia was the organizer of the crime, they wanted to make a Greater Serbia out of Yugoslavia. The verdict was handed down, I am not satisfied with the sentence, but I am satisfied with the verdict,” she said, adding that more will be done to bring those responsible for the crimes to justice.

“Let the youth build a better future, let them build trust,” she said.
