The United Nations has informed the governments of 57 countries that their nationals are in camps in northeastern Syria waiting to be repatriated.

The letter, signed by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, and Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism, Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, said that nationals of Serbia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Kosovo were among the 64,000 mainly women and children in the Al-Hawl and Roj camps under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces.

The women and children are family members of combatants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and were relocated to those camps following the defeat of ISIL forces in March 2019.

The UN human rights officials warned of extremely bad conditions in the camps and called the respective governments to repatriate their nationals.
