Parts of the concrete were broken off the minaret of the Aladza mosque in the eastern Bosnian town of Foca, and local Bosniak returnees believe that this was the result of someone shooting at the mosque.

Local police said they are investigating the act of vandalism which was reported on Thursday.

The Aladza mosque was built in 1549 and was the first mosque in Bosnia and Herzegovina built in the classical Ottoman style. It is officially part of Bosnia’s cultural heritage and is on UNESCO’s list of world heritage monuments.

The mosque was destroyed on August 2, 1992, and was only rebuilt recently. It was reopened in May 2019.
