United States National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met with Bosnia’s international administrator, High Representative Christian Schmidt, on Monday and expressed strong US support for his office and its mandate to oversee the civilian implementation of the 1995 Dayton Peace Accords.

Sullivan and Schmidt emphasized their “shared commitment to Bosnia and Herzegovina’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” a White House statement said.

The two met amid a major political crisis in Bosnia over an initiative by the leadership in the country’s semi-autonomous entity, Republika Srpska (RS), to unilaterally withdraw from numerous state institutions, including the army.

Sullivan and Schmidt discussed “the importance of functioning institutions to deliver services, ensure stability and the rule of law, and provide the basis for peace and economic opportunity for all the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina.”

They also agreed on the need to counter corruption and support civil society.

Russia and China have repeatedly said they do not accept the mandate of the new High Representative in BiH.
